💡 What is a Superbill?

A Superbill is a detailed receipt that includes all the information your insurance company needs to consider reimbursing you for therapy services.
Unlike a normal receipt, a Superbill includes:

  • Your name, date of birth, and contact info

  • Provider details (name, credentials, license, NPI number)

  • The date and cost of each session

  • Diagnosis code (ICD-10)

  • Procedure code (CPT) — this identifies what kind of service you received

Think of it as a formal communication between your therapist and your insurance company — in their language. Without it, your insurance won’t know what services you received, and won’t be able to consider reimbursement.

What are Out-of-Network Benefits?

Out-of-Network (OON) Benefits are part of some insurance plans that reimburse you when you pay for services outside of their provider network. That means:

  • You pay me directly for our sessions.

  • I give you a Superbill.

  • You send that Superbill to your insurance provider.

  • If your plan includes OON benefits and you’ve met your deductible, they may reimburse you for part of what you paid (often 60–80%).

Important: Many people don’t realize they even have OON benefits! Always check with your insurer you could be missing out on hundreds or even thousands of dollars in reimbursements each year.

How to Check Your Out-of-Network Coverage

Before starting therapy, call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask:

  • “Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?”

  • “What’s my out-of-network deductible?”

  • “What percentage of services do you reimburse once that’s met?”

  • “Are services from a licensed psychologist covered?”

  • “How do I submit a Superbill?”
